SUOR MARCHESA ESTATE
SUOR MARCHESA ESTATE
he Suor Marchesa Estate is located in Riesi, in the heart of Sicily, on a gentle hill well-exposed to the winds, where summers are very hot and winters are mild and short. In this part of the island, Nero d’Avola has been cultivated for centuries, and in the Riesi area, thanks to the unique soil and climate conditions, it has found an ideal habitat. Acquired by Duca di Salaparuta in 2002, Suor Marchesa was chosen for its south-facing exposure, excellent ventilation, irradiation, and the limestone composition of the soil. Exposed to the south, the vineyard receives ample sunlight throughout the day, and the proper slope and natural ventilation, provided by the hilly area, allow the grapes to maintain the correct hydration balance. Meanwhile, the intense exposure to sunlight, coupled with mild temperatures and a significant temperature range, allows the grape clusters to reach full maturity, ensuring a rich aromatic profile and greater longevity. The vineyards, currently covering approximately 127 hectares, are cultivated with bush-trained vines, and it is in some carefully selected areas of the vineyard that Duca di Salaparuta’s most revolutionary wine is born – Duca Enrico. This was the first pure Nero d’Avola wine, originating in 1984, which began in this corner of Sicily and has since reached all corners of the world. However, Duca di Salaparuta also chose this terroir to cultivate another beloved grape variety throughout Italy: Vermentino, from which Sentiero del Vento was born in 2020. Its aromas of Mediterranean scrub and a palate characterized by freshness and minerality provide a unique interpretation of these grapes and embody the company’s desire to continually explore new paths. Climate – Mild and short winters, hot and very dry summers.

SUSTAINABILITY
The Duca di Salaparuta Estates – Suor Marchesa, Vajasindi, and Risignolo – are managed through an integrated production system, which includes agronomic and phytosanitary practices that restrict the use of phytosanitary products and the number of treatments, allowing only mechanical weed control. So, there is utmost respect for the vineyard and its fruits, which remain intact in the glass, thanks to equally sustainable practices in the winery.
